When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
– Luke 3:21-22
Isn’t it Awesome that we have an actual account of the Holy Spirit baptism of Jesus (Yeshua HaMashiach) our Messiah in the Bible?! I don’t know about you, but I personally think that is AMAZING!! Now why would the Perfect, Spotless, Son of God need to be baptized (immersed) in water?? The reason why is because Jesus was trying to teach people how to receive God’s Holy Spirit! You see, Jesus was birthed through God’s Holy Spirit, so he already had God’s Holy Spirit living inside of him. On the other hand, we are not naturally born with the Holy Spirit already living inside of us. Yet, what is even more Awesome is that Jesus went further to be baptized immersed in water to fulfill all righteousness even though he already had God’s Holy Spirit living inside of him! And if we examine this scripture, it was not until after Jesus was baptized in water and was praying did he receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit as a dove and that is when God’s voice came from heaven for the first time saying, “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” This goes to show that Jesus’ immersion baptism in water and his Holy Spirit baptism were both pleasing in God’s sight! On top of that, it was the first time that God literally called Jesus his Son! WOW!!! Now that is POWERFUL! And if Jesus – the Perfect, Spotless, Son of God – had to be baptized in water in order to receive the Holy Spirit as a dove, then how much do we need to be baptized in water in order to receive the Holy Spirit since we are unclean and imperfect human beings?!! If we look to Jesus we can clearly see his perfect example of what we need to do in our own lives in order to be pleasing in God’s sight as well as be called Sons and Daughters by the Most High! It all has to do with receiving the Holy Spirit! And when we are baptized in water, just like Jesus, and we pray to receive the Holy Spirit, we shall receive this very precious gift from God!
